FROM THE VERY BEGINNING… I have been preoccupied with the way in which we [Black women] carry and construct the weight of the world. What do we do with it? How do we wear it? What does it become? Where does it live? How and when does it show up for us?
It doesn’t matter how she sits—who aggresses or offends her—if she is waiting, resting, watching or working—her energy is weighted and concerned. She is at times devoid of emotions, unbothered, triggered and or reflects joy in the midst of pain. As I am writing this, I am not sure that the range of what we feel, see and experience is fully understood.
In every piece I create—I strive to portray the moment [she] and all she creates is ‘being’. The space where without consequence she surrenders. When she sees that as a co-creator of humanity she is planting seeds in gardens that she may never see grow. And that no matter her station in life, she is aligned and knows that it is okay.
